New Year's Resolution: Give a Gift to FITs

“We are not preparing sufficient numbers of trainees to take our place as a result of attrition from allergists retiring. It's important that we look for ways to expand our training programs further.” - ACAAI President Richard Weber, MD, FACAAI

“Training slots are dwindling to more lucrative inpatient-care or procedure-based subspecialties because they bring in more revenue for the hospitals.” - ACAAI President-Elect Michael Foggs, MD, FACAAI.

“The Foundation represents an opportunity for us to give to the present and future of our specialty. Funding of the grants to young investigators demonstrates our commitment to allergy. Without an income stream sufficient to maintain fellowships, many university programs are struggling to continue.” - ACAAI Foundation President Nathan Segall, MD, FACAAI

Training and research costs are increasingly born by private donations. Financial support from ACAAI members is crucial for meeting the increasing needs for education and research within our specialty through the Foundation's Fellow-in-Training Program Relief Grants and Young Faculty Support Awards. These Foundation grants and awards are made possible by donors including:

  • J. Andrew Grant, Jr., MD, EFACAAI, Galveston, Texas, who achieved 10K Club status for contributions of at least $10,000
  • The Alliance of ACAAI, as a corporate donor, achieved 10K Club status for contributions from a variety of fundraising activities including the 2012 photo contest.
  • Suresh C. Anand, MD, FACAAI, Phoenix, Ariz., who achieved 5K Club status for contributions of at least $5,000.

“Our specialty has a future that needs recognition in the medical community, and we welcome insights from members on how this can be best accomplished,” Dr. Segall said. “We are currently developing a strategic plan for Foundation activities and wish to solicit any and all suggestions,” he said. Please email your suggestions to Robert Krawisz at

Fulfilling your New Year's resolution to give a gift to help fellows-in-training may be handled in a variety of ways, including cash donations, through a contribution of stock, charitable trusts/bequests. In times of bereavement, you can request donations be made, in lieu of flowers, to help advance the care of allergy and immunology. The Jean Chapman Endowment Fund for Education was established to help support fellows-in-training travel grants.

The Tithe-a-Talk program makes it easy for you to donate honoraria from an upcoming speaking engagement, which will be applied toward your 5K Club or 10K Club contribution goal. Simply complete the Tithe-a-Talk form available on the Foundation page of the College member website ( and present it to the association/company that is sponsoring your talk.

Donors who achieve the status of 5K Club ($5,000 level) and 10K Club ($10,000 level) are acknowledged at each Annual Meeting with a special ribbon and listings in the Convention Program Guide and the Foundation Honor Roll display.

Donations are always welcome. Please send your contribution to: ACAAI Foundation, 85 W. Algonquin Road, Suite 550, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Checks should be made payable to ACAAI Foundation.
